As a child, a rock or a stone found on the beach, in the woods, or even on the shoulder of the road intrigued me, especially if it was wet. I was forced to pick it up to study its unique color, its smooth shape, and its fantastic veining.
Today, stone, removed in blocks or boulders from quarries fascinates me. Its permanence, figure, texture, and seductive coolness engross me. The hardness of the material and the difficulty of sculpting and finishing stone provide a great physical challenge, which alone, is both inspiring and immensely satisfying. I study the grain, the shape, and the size of the boulder to visualize the form trapped within. I choose to release that abstract form to showcase both the hidden elegance and the power of the stone, as well as the sublime beauty of the form that spoke to me.
I prefer to create abstract forms that communicate a peaceful state of being, a reason to pause and reflect, rather than to impose upon the noble stone a resemblance, a mere copy, of forms and shapes found naturally in our everyday lives. While each work undoubtedly contains recognizable elements, I work with the stone and strive to expose its organic and sensual self for all to admire as I create one-of-a-kind Works of Art.
My goal is to create sculpture that captures the interest of the viewer: A form that reveals the beauty in the stone, its shape, its finish, and perhaps texture; A Work of Art that compels the viewer to touch, to caress, and demand to experience the piece in the round.
